Cruising for wellness

Wellness is making waves. Forget the confines of the traditional massage table, wooden sauna and crowded steam room, facilities are now drifting out to sea.

Many cruise-lines are embracing the wellness concept with a more holistic lifestyle attitude with integrated treatments and therapies forming themed programmes. From ship to shore, wellness flows from Zen-inspired health and fitness programmes onboard to inspiring shore experiences to achieve that mind and body balance.

MSC is attracting the “weight watchers” by offering a themed cruise which includes consultations with Weight Watcher staff, seminars, cookery demonstrations with approved calorie monitored meals to enjoy while cruising without the weight and guilt. Sailing from the Caribbean, this cruise is aboard the MSC Divina. A Balinese-themed Aurea Spa, complete with a salt relaxation room and ice waterfall within its thermal suite complements the facilities aboard the MSC Meraviglia, while “Wellness Experience by Technogym” is planned to be available throughout the MSC fleet for health conscious passengers.

Mindful living is the concept behind Seabourn Cruises’ wellness programme designed in partnership with integrative medicine practitioner Dr. Andrew Weil and onboard Spa by Steiner. A “mindful living coach” leads classes such as yoga and meditation as well as inspiring talks and seminars from Weil’s books. For those lucky enough, Dr Weil himself with host lectures during his annual Seabourn voyage.

Shoring up with 10 Mediterranean ports, Regent Seven Seas Cruises has launched its exclusive “Seven Seas Wellness Tours”. From Tai Chi in the Imperial Gardens of Marseille to a hydrothermal pool visit in Sorrento, guests are able to combine their onboard health activities with a choice of unique wellness experiences in the destinations they visit. On a similar wave, Oceania Cruises has rolled out a range of Wellness Tours to include a laughter workshop in a Spanish farmhouse.

Aromatherapy and holistic therapies are the key ingredients to the new sensory-styled concept of the Italian-inspired Zàgara Beauty Spa on Silversea Cruises’ Silver Muse. This adds to its “Wellness Expedition” voyages on Silver Discoverer where Pilates, water aerobics, nutritional counselling and yoga feature as components of their health programmes.

Sleepless nights? Celebrity Cruises together with onboard spa provider, Canyon Ranch, will be offering a “Mindful Dreams” wellness programme which include spa treatments and lectures to help with sleep patterns onboard and at home.

The wellness concept has changed the reputation of cruising. Today, think Zen, mindfulness and even Weight Watchers! Cruising has become good for your health.
